Administrative Jobs

Nature of the Industry

Administrative jobs promote the efficient operation of a business or organization. Administrative positions involve organizing and supervising daily tasks, such as preparing correspondence, creating employee schedules, ordering supplies, or coordinating building maintenance. Companies that are focused on being “green” often consider responsibility for recycling programs and energy efficiency efforts part of administrative jobs.

Most administrative professionals work in offices, but many conduct site visits as part of their managerial responsibilities. In many ways, technology has limited the growth opportunities for administrative positions. With email, virtual conference calls, and electronic record keeping systems, businesses are more efficient than ever before. When faced with pressure to cut costs in order to maintain a profitable business, administrative jobs are especially vulnerable.

Types of Jobs

In the past, administrative jobs were simply secretarial work. Today, the field encompasses administrative assistants, office managers, personal assistants, purchasing agents, and facilities managers.

Training and Education

Administrative employment requires a person to be very organized and to communicate well with others. People who work in this field have a number of different responsibilities and must often work with groups of people in order to complete a specific task.

Qualifications for an administrative job can vary widely. At a small company, one may only need a high school diploma and a few years of on-the-job training. For larger businesses, however, positions typically require at least an associate’s degree. A bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or human resources may be preferable. If the position involves facility management, applicants will likely need a bachelor’s degree in facility management and a background in architecture or engineering.
