Recent television shows have glorified the life of the people who make others beautiful. Stylists are the new stars of reality TV. Most of them learned their skills at beauty school. Beauty schools turn out stylists, cosmetologists, and estheticians. Stylists advise clients and execute hairstyles and colorings. Cosmetologists are experts on makeup for individuals and for costume purposes. Estheticians are skin care experts who help clients care for their skin and ameliorate skin disorders.

Beauty schools offer degree programs and certificate programs. Some offer a degree for hundreds of hours of course work in beauty. Most schools will balance their training with a certain number of hours of classroom work followed by a nearly equal amount of work in the school's salon working on clients. Stylists take classes in coloring, cold waving, scalp treatments, shampooing, and styling. Many schools offer additional education in manicuring as some stylists do both. Estheticians study skin care, chemical treatments, and facial and body waxing. A cosmetology license curriculum may be a combination of the other two disciplines with a study of makeup application. Makeup for movies and for fashion is taught in many schools.

Makeup artists are in high demand in the movie, music, and fashion industries. Stylists work for themselves, in spas, and for the performing arts. Estheticians also work at spas and salons, for department stores, and for cosmetics companies. The field is expanding, but the compensation varies greatly. Beauty school is a place to get a leg up.
