All California high school students are required to pass the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) in order to graduate. A high school diploma is granted upon successful completion of the exam.

The legal foundation for CAHSEE is Assembly Bill 347, which requires the test be taken by all graduating high school students in California. AB 347 also mandates that students who do not pass the examination be provided with two consecutive years of “intense instruction,” at the end of that they should be able to pass. If the student passes the CAHSEE test either before the two-year instructional period is complete or without having to begin it at all, the diploma will be granted. AB 347 applies to all schools that accept state education funding.

The “intensive instruction” required by AB 347 may entail individual or small group instruction, additional teachers, counseling, and the use of diagnostic assessment tools. Intensive instruction aimed at a CAHSEE test score is tailored to meet individual student needs.

The primary subjects addressed in the CAHSEE test are English and Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. The standards of the test are set by the High School Exit Examination Standards Panel appointed by the State Superintendent of Public Education.

The English and Language Arts part of the CAHSEE consists of two sections: reading and writing. The reading section of the CAHSEE measures vocabulary skills, understanding of literature and literary writing, and non-fiction or informational reading. This part of the ELA section is composed of multiple-choice questions. The writing section of the exam requires the test taker to respond to a specific topic or reading passage.

The Mathematics portion of the CAHSEE test meets the state math standards up to the first level of Algebra. Within that context, the math exam includes statistical and data analysis, probability, geometry, and first-level algebra. Lower- and upper-level state math requirements for passage of the CAHSEE test include an understanding of decimals, percentages, and fractions. The math sections are composed entirely of multiple-choice questions.
