Construction Jobs

Nature of the Industry

Construction jobs involve building, maintaining, and modifying houses, office buildings, apartment complexes, schools, bridges, roads, tunnels, and factories. These jobs are important to the development of communities, since people need to have safe and attractive structures in which to live, work, study, and travel.

There are three main types of construction jobs. General contractors are professionals who specialize in building both residential and commercial structures. Civil engineering contractors build sewers, roads, tunnels, bridges, and other social structures. Trade contractors are subcontractors who perform work in a specific area such as electricity or plumbing; they can work on any type of structure.

Construction jobs are expected to increase in upcoming years, due to population growth and the need for renovations on various structures. New opportunities will be available for professionals skilled in “green construction” practices such as building with recyclable materials and promoting energy effectiveness.

Construction jobs encompass all aspects of building and maintenance. The field includes jobs for carpenters, drywall installers, electricians, plumbers, pipe layers, roofers, painters, heating and air conditioning mechanics, flooring installers, stonemasons, plasterers, and sheet metal workers.

Training can be obtained by completing an apprenticeship program or on-the-job learning. Technical and trade schools also have programs to help prepare people for construction jobs.

State licenses are needed for certain occupations in the construction field, including electricians, plumbers, and heavy machinery operators. If you are interested in a construction career, check to see what the laws are in your state.
