The Council provides a list of accredited distance learning UK colleges on their website.

Distance Learning Schools

Filed under: Schools — Distance Learning Center @ 8:06 am

Distance learning schools are becoming an increasingly popular choice for students wanting to learn about a trade. Trade schools have traditionally been for these students who do not want to pursue a 4 year degree but would rather have an education in a specific career field of interest. Distance learning school offering trade programs have made it possible for high school students, working adults or retirees to learn about a new career field.

Distance learning trade programs cover a wide variety of careers. The automotive industry is particularly interested in employees with some educational background in the field. Distance learning schools offer associates programs in various fields of automotive technology, auto body repair, and automotive service. Students who want to enter the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) field have many program choices at distance learning schools offering associates and bachelors degrees in heating and air conditioning. Distance learning schools like the Stratford Career Institute offer textbook based distance learning programs in the field of esthetics and cosmetology. Distance Learning School

Filed under: Schools — Distance Learning Center @ 8:05 am

Obtaining a certification, high school diploma, or college degree through a distance learning school is beneficial to anyone who can not attend a traditional classroom setting. The most important consideration when choosing a distance learning school is verifying the school is accredited. Accreditation means that the school has been evaluated by an agency or group of representatives from an agency that ensure the curriculum and educational program are at or above accepted educational standards. Accreditation can be regional, national or professional. The United Stated Department of Education (USDE) and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) are the 2 most valuable sources of accreditation agencies. By contacting the USDE or CHEA one can verify the accreditation status of a distance learning school. In some industries, a distance learning school with an accreditation from a professional agency is just as important as a regional or national accreditation. If one is pursuing a psychology degree for example, choosing a distance learning school that has been accredited by the American Psychological Association is vital. Employers in the healthcare field will be looking for the professional accreditation from the American Psychological Association as verification that the degree program is educationally sound. A distance learning school may not yet be accredited but be in the process of being evaluated by an accrediting agency. Each individual considering a distance learning program needs to know if his or her profession will accept a degree from an unaccredited distance learning school. Finding a fully accredited distance learning school is not difficult as long as the appropriate agencies such as the USDE and the CHEA are consulted.

Distance Learning Psychology

There are many types of distance learning psychology degree programs available. Bachelor’s degrees in psychology, human behavior, and behavioral science are available through distance learning colleges. Distance learning psychology masters programs include psychology, counseling, human behavior, forensic and organizational psychology. PhD’s in psychology and clinical psychology are available. Capella University is a distance learning psychology school that offers masters and doctorate degrees in many areas of psychology. All coursework can be completed online, but several weeks of attendance at educational seminars or colloquia are required to complete the degree programs.

When choosing a distance learning psychology school it is very important to consider all the steps in ones educational journey. In order to practice in the field of psychology outside of a lab or clinic, education beyond a master’s degree is necessary. Only graduates of doctorate programs are authorized to write a prescription which earns them the title of psychologists rather than counselors. If planning on moving forward towards a masters or doctorate, the student should plan ahead and know where he or she intends on transferring. The student should meet with the university, whether it is a traditional school or a distance learning psychology school, and verify that all credits earned will be accepted as transfer credits.

As with all distance learning degree programs, accreditation of the distance learning psychology program is vital. The Committee on Accreditation is the official accrediting agency of the psychology profession. Accredited programs can be accessed through the American Psychological Associations website. At this time, there are no distance learning psychology programs that are conducted completely away from the classroom that are accredited by the Committee on Accreditation. There are some online courses that are part of traditional programs which are accredited, but no complete programs. This information is critical when considering a distance learning psychology degree. A degree from a school not accredited by the Committee on Accreditation may not lead to as many job or salary opportunities as a traditional psychology degree.

Distance Learning Programs

Filed under: Definition of Distance Learning — Distance Learning Center @ 8:04 am

Distance learning programs begin at the elementary and secondary levels of education. According to a 2005 study by the U.S. Department of Education, 38% of high schools currently offer distance learning courses as an option for students. Distance learning programs at the pre-college level are especially helpful for people in rural areas. Some of the smaller districts that service rural communities do not have access to a large and diverse number of courses. A U.S. Department of Education study revealed that two-way interactive video is the most common source of technology used in high school level distance education programs. Many schools want to expand their distance learning programs but the cost of technology is a factor for most districts so many can not afford to expand.

Distance learning programs at the postsecondary or college level are increasingly popular. The U.S. Department of Education recorded that over half of postsecondary colleges offered distance learning courses in 2001. The popularity of distance learning programs is attributed mainly to the number of working adults who want to either begin or continue their education. Distance learning programs provide flexibility for working adults to complete coursework in the evenings or on the weekends. Postsecondary distance learning programs give students the opportunity to earn a degree from outside of their state or country of origin which has been made possible by online distance learning programs.

Distance Learning Program

Filed under: Definition of Distance Learning — Distance Learning Center @ 8:04 am

A distance learning program is an educational program that is delivered either partially or totally away from the college campus. The method of delivery of the coursework varies among distance learning programs. A distance learning program that is print based means that the student purchases a book, receives a syllabus, completes assignments, and submits the assignments through the mail or fax. An online distance learning program involves communication through the internet. Most colleges have a distance learning website where courses can be accessed and a virtual classroom is present. Assignments can be submitted through the websites and quizzes and tests can be accessed. A distance learning program that is videocassette or television based requires the student to either watch lectures or movies on a video that the college disperses or on a channel where the college broadcasts educational programs. A hybrid distance learning program mixes distance education with some face-to-face contact with a professor. The student may be required to go to campus several times throughout the semester to attend lectures, test reviews, or labs. Some courses require conference calls to communicate with the professor and other students. The distance learning program can require testing to be completed at the university campus with a facilitator.

A hybrid distance learning program has some advantages to a strictly online program. Although the student will have to travel to the university on one or more occasions, interaction with a professor can be helpful. Some coursework is easier to understand with a teacher explaining the material or walking the student through it. A student of a distance learning program can often feel disconnected from the college experience and attending the university throughout the semester can help alleviate that feeling. Many times the instructor will tell students what to expect on exams or have on campus review sessions which can be extremely helpful. Connecting with other students in a hybrid distance learning program can lead to the opportunity for discussions with classmates or the creation of peer study groups.

Distance Learning PhD

Filed under: Degrees — Distance Learning Center @ 8:03 am

A distance learning PhD is a doctorate obtained through a college offering classes that can be completed away from a university classroom. Many colleges offer distance learning PhD programs in a variety of career fields including education, health services, and history. A distance learning PhD program should take 3-8 years to complete depending on how much time the student has to focus on the degree. Coursework, exams, both oral and written, and a dissertation must be completed. The dissertation in a distance learning PhD program is almost identical to an on campus doctoral program’s dissertation. The dissertation is highly individualized, lengthy and can be completed at the student’s own pace. Because the dissertation is a huge part of earning a doctorate and is written outside of the classroom setting, distance learning PhD programs are a popular avenue to earning the degree. It is possible to get help in completing the distance learning PhD. Potential students should look for universities that offer an extensive online library or access to the campus library. Students should find out how much attention and access they will have to a professor while completing the coursework and dissertation. Once the dissertation is complete, a committee from the college generally evaluates the written work to determine if the PhD will be given to the student. Before entering a distance learning PhD program, the student should verify how the evaluation of the dissertation system works and who will be completing the evaluation.

Distance Learning Online

Filed under: Internet Distance Learning — Distance Learning Center @ 8:03 am

Distance learning online programs range from a high school diploma to a doctorate. Professional certifications and information on almost any subject can be received through distance learning online. Distance learning online is a fairly new trend because widespread use of the internet is less than 20 years old. Throughout history, society has become more mobile and global creating a need for an educational institution that could be accessed away from a traditional college setting. Distance learning online schools have provided the solution and now students can choose to earn an online degree from many schools all over the country and even overseas. Because the distance learning courses are online, out of state tuition rates do not apply making an online degree affordable.

Most distance learning online degree programs are conducted completely over the internet. Admission, registration, academic counseling and textbooks can all be purchased online. The courses are conducted in a virtual classroom with other online students and a professor. Chat rooms or discussion boards are typically present in the classroom where students are either encouraged or required to interact with one another. Some distance learning online colleges require students to work on virtual learning teams where they must complete team projects over the internet. Through online videos and podcasting, students can view previously taped lectures from instructors without ever entering a classroom. Online students can communicate with other students and their instructors through email. Web conferencing is another communication source where students can talk to their instructors or peer groups in real time if the students and the college have access to the technology.

Distance learning online programs offer flexibility but also require certain personality traits for successful completion. Attendance requires self-motivation and self-discipline. The online student has to be able to schedule time for each class to complete the coursework which requires time management skills. Computer literacy is very important. In a traditional classroom many students rely on somebody else to ask the instructor for clarification. The online student needs to be able to ask questions without fear to make sure he or she understands the class concepts.

Distance Learning Nursing

Filed under: Specific Degrees — Distance Learning Center @ 8:02 am

Distance learning nursing degree programs were created to provide a flexible and convenient way for people wanting to enter the healthcare industry to become Registered Nurses, or RN’s. Distance learning nursing degrees range from associates to doctorates, and the career possibilities include nursing assistants, registered nurses, and perioperative or emergency room nurses. There are distance learning nursing programs where all the coursework can be completed away from the college and some programs are hybrid, requiring some coursework to be completed on campus and some off campus.

Distance learning nursing degree programs that are completed entirely online have come under some criticism in the healthcare field. Much of the criticism surrounds the fact that working as a nurse requires hands on interaction with patients. Learning how to properly interact with a variety of patients comes from experience generally gained through a traditional nursing program. In traditional programs, students are guided by a preceptor, or person who has worked in the nursing industry and can guide the students through real life examples. Some distance learning nursing programs provide access to preceptors who work alongside the students bringing them practical and up to date knowledge. Preceptors are especially important in perioperative distance learning nursing programs because operating room nurses see a wide variety of highly critical patients and must be able to continuously communicate with doctors. To counteract the critics of distance learning nursing programs, a distance learning nursing student may consider getting a part time position or volunteering in a clinical setting. This experience will provide the student with real world situational experience.

The American Association of Colleges and Nursing, or AACN, is the nationally recognized agency that researches educational facilities specializing in nursing. The AACN’s stance on distance learning nursing programs is that the programs must provide the same level of excellence and accreditation standards as a traditional nursing program. The AACN further states that the distance learning nursing program must provide social and clinical education for the nurses. The Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education or CCNE is both nationally recognized and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as the accreditation agency for nursing schools. When considering a distance learning nursing program, one should ensure it is accredited by the CCNE. The standards of the CCNE for distance learning nursing programs are the same as for traditional programs and if the school is accredited, the student will know he or she is getting a quality degree.
