Education Jobs
Nature of the Industry
Education jobs are familiar to nearly everyone, simply because
schooling is required for children between the ages of 5 and 16. People
who work in the education field teach basic skills such as writing,
reading, and mathematics as well as citizenship and vocational skills.
They can teach at preschools, elementary schools, middle schools, high
schools, or postsecondary institutions. At each level of the education
system, there are private and public schools.
The demand for people interested in education jobs is expected
to increase at an above-average rate. Many current teachers are
expected to retire and new government regulations have led to a higher
demand for teachers in the K-12 environment. For postsecondary
education jobs, growth can be attributed to the large numbers of people
seeking career retraining or certifications needed for professional
advancement.
Types of Jobs
Education jobs include opportunities for working with students
from preschool through college. Some of the positions you might find
include preschool teachers, elementary school teachers, middle school
teachers, high school teachers, college and university professors,
special education teachers, vocational education teachers, and teachers
for English as a Second Language (ESL) students. Librarians,
counselors, coordinators, aides, and assistants work closely with the
instructors to support student academic development.
Training and Education
The training needed for a job in the education field depends
on the age of the students you want to teach. A preschool teacher can
begin work with a high school diploma, although additional training and
certification through a community college may be necessary. Elementary,
middle school, and high school teachers must have bachelor’s degrees.
Certification is needed for teachers in public schools, but is not
always required for teachers at private schools. To teach postsecondary
courses, you need a master’s degree or a doctoral degree in the
appropriate subject. Education jobs in the support area, such as
counselors and librarians, generally require a bachelor’s degree and
special certifications.
