EMT-B Test Review

NREMT-B – National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Basic Exam:

The NREMT-B is a certification exam written by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and administered by Pearson VUE that is designed to determine whether or not a particular individual has the knowledge necessary to be an effective Emergency Medical Technician. This exam allows an individual to demonstrate the minimum basic knowledge required in order to become a certified EMT. The exam consists of a computerized multiple-choice exam that examines the candidate's knowledge of life-saving techniques and procedure and a practical exam that allows an individual to actually demonstrate their ability to carry out these techniques. The multiple-choice and practical exams cover information related to CPR, patient assessment, first aid, oxygen administration, airway and ventilation management, bleeding control, shock management, and immobilization skills.

The exam-taker will have 2 hours to complete the exam. The exam is scored based on the percentage of questions and techniques answered or used correctly and the candidate will receive a final grade of pass or fail depending on whether or not their percentage score meets or exceeds the 85% standard set by the National Registry. A candidate that passes the NREMT-B will be certified as a Basic EMT, also known as an EMT-B and can serve on a basic life support unit by him or herself or on an intermediate or advanced life support unit if Intermediate EMTs or Paramedics are on board as well. However, there may also be additional certifications required to work as a certified Basic EMT depending upon the region and state in which you work. The types of life-saving techniques that a Basic EMT can legally use in a particular situation are usually extremely limited and primarily consist of skills actually demonstrated on the NREMT-B. Potential candidates for the NREMT-B should contact the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians online or by phone to pay the registration fee and receive permission to take the exam. Once the candidate receives permission to take the exam, the candidate can schedule a test date with Pearson VUE. The registration fee for the exam is currently $70.
