EMT-P Test Review
NREMT-P – National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Paramedic Exam:
The NREMT-P is a certification exam very similar to the NREMT-I that is written by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and administered by Pearson VUE in order to determine whether or not an individual has the knowledge required to be an effective Emergency Medical Technician. However, unlike the NREMT-I, the NREMT-P allows the candidate to demonstrate an advanced knowledge of life-saving techniques rather than a basic or intermediate knowledge. The exam, like the other NREMT exams, consists of a computerized multiple-choice exam that examines the candidate's knowledge of basic, intermediate, and advanced life-saving techniques and a practical exam that allows the candidate to demonstrate mastery of these techniques. The multiple-choice and practical exams cover all of the information covered on the NREMT-B and the NREMT-I, but also covers EKG interpretation, advanced respiratory and airway support, advanced cardiac life support, trauma life support, pharmacology, pediatric life support, and advanced resuscitation techniques.
The exam-taker will have 2 ½ hours to complete the exam. The exam is scored in exactly the same format as the other NREMT exams and the candidate will receive a passing grade if he or she completes at least 85% of the exam correctly. A candidate that passes the NREMT-P will be certified as a Paramedic, sometimes also referred to as an EMT-P, and can serve on any basic, intermediate, or advanced life support unit. A paramedic can legally use an extensive array of life-saving techniques and has the authority to prescribe certain medications in order to keep a patient alive. However, even though a paramedic is free to use virtually any method to keep the patient alive until he or she can receive further care, there are still limits to the types of drugs and emergency procedures that a paramedic can use. There may also be further certifications required to work as a certified Paramedic depending upon the region or state in which you work. Potential candidates for the NREMT-P should contact the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians online or by phone to pay the registration fee and receive permission to take the exam. Once the candidate has received permission to take the exam, he or she can schedule a test date with Pearson VUE. The registration fee for the exam is currently $110.
