Engineering Jobs
Nature of the Industry
Engineers are professionals who use their knowledge of math and
science to solve problems and create practical products. They work in
product design, testing, manufacturing, and upkeep. Although all
positions in the field require extensive scientific knowledge in a
variety of areas, engineering jobs are divided into four broad
categories: biology, geology, physics, and chemistry. Under each
category are several subdivisions, some of which can be divided into
further specialties. For example, civil engineering is classified under
the geology umbrella. However, civil engineers can specialize in
structures, water, or transportation.
The outlook for engineering jobs remains strong due to continually
advancing technology. Opportunities are especially promising for
biomedical engineers and civil engineers. Engineering professionals who
are experienced in research, consulting, and development will have good
employment prospects as well.
Types of Jobs
Engineering jobs are typically classified by their area of
specialization. Jobs include positions for aerospace engineers,
agricultural engineers, biomedical engineers, chemical engineers, civil
engineers, computer engineers, electrical engineers, environmental
engineers, geological engineers, safety engineers, industrial
engineers, marine engineers, materials engineers, mechanical engineers,
mining engineers, nuclear engineers, and petroleum engineers.
Training and Education
Strong skills in science, technology and mathematics are essential
for success in engineering jobs. Typically, an engineer will need a
bachelor’s degree in a specialty area such as electrical engineering or
civil engineering. Becoming a licensed professional engineer (PE) may
also be recommended. This licensure requires earning a degree from a
program recognized by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and
Technology (ABET), having four years of experience in engineering jobs,
and passing a state test that evaluates your engineering knowledge.
