Entertainment Jobs
The entertainment industry provides the services people enjoy
during their leisure time. This includes plays, performance dance,
concerts, and athletic events as well as exhibits at museums or
historical sites. The goal of entertainment jobs is to help provide a
fun and exciting experience for the consumer, whether the entertainment
is live, educational, or recreational in nature.
Many jobs in the entertainment industry involve extensive
travel, since performers must visit several different cities to put on
plays, concerts, or sporting events. Weekend and evening hours are
expected for entertainment jobs, as well as plenty of overtime while on
tour. This can be difficult for those with families at home.
Opportunities for people interested in entertainment jobs are
expected to increase at an above-moderate rate since modern technology
has left the average person with more leisure time than ever before.
Unfortunately, most of this growth will occur in opportunities for
part-time and seasonal workers. The arts industry is heavily dependent
upon grant funding and thus likely to struggle whenever the economy is
poor, but the public’s continued interest in physical fitness as a way
to improve one’s overall sense of wellbeing will help keep
opportunities in this area on the rise.
Nature of the Industry
Types of Jobs
Entertainment jobs include positions for actors, choreographers,
directors, conductors, musicians, singers, dancers, and athletes. There
are also jobs for people who support the performers, such as fitness
trainers, administrative clerks, security guards, guides, coaches, and
media workers. Jobs for ticket takers, concession stand workers,
custodians, and groundskeepers are sometimes considered part of the
industry as well.
Training and Education
Entertainment jobs focus on communication and interpersonal skills.
Service workers must have a high school diploma, while higher-level
support staff positions require a bachelor’s degree in a field such as
marketing, business, or sports medicine. Performers have great natural
talent, but must also devote many hours of study to perfecting their
gifts. Private lessons and coaching sessions help them develop their
craft over years of intense study.
