The film industry is changing rapidly, becoming more democratic and opening itself to new media and viewing platforms. Films are easier to make because of the development of digital photography and editing. This has opened up an industry to do-it-yourself projects and more films in general both in theaters, on cable, and online. Although the techniques that go into filmmaking are becoming more easily accessible, that does not mean that amateurish films are popular. Film school is still the place to gain hands-on, technically specific experience in the process of film production.

Film schools have certificate and degree programs. Some offer bachelor's degrees or MFA (Master of Fine Arts) degrees in film and television production. Classes are available that are both practical and theoretical. Theoretical classes cover areas such as film history, film criticism, and semiotics. Practical classes cover all aspects of production from screenplay writing to editing to post-production. Specific aspects of the film process are covered, like film sound and sound editing. In addition, many schools have studios with advanced sound and lighting equipment to produce Hollywood-caliber productions. Digital photography and editing have made film production easier, but the techniques for these media require expert explanation and teaching. Many students that graduate from film school leave with a complete film as a final project. This can be used in film festivals or as a calling card to work in the film industry.

A big budget film employs hundreds of people, many of whom have gained their expertise at film school. Cameramen, directors, gaffers, and editors collaborate to bring a project to fruition. Some producers use the same talent on multiple projects. Many film workers are private contractors that move from project to project. Film school teaches the methods of film production that are in demand.
