Finance is essentially the management of money. In the context of the business world, this translates to handling investments in markets, such as stocks and bonds. It also refers to raising money to make capital improvements, launch new ventures, and purchase insurance. Compensation in finance is highly competitive, but the job market is equally competitive. A finance degree will set candidates apart from the pack and put them in place to manage other people's money and, perhaps, their own growing nest egg.

Mathematical aptitude is a prerequisite for financial degree programs. While it is possible to obtain a bachelor's degree in finance, many of the most successful financial operatives have completed master's degrees in finance. Candidates study traditional bond and equity trading. They also delve into the science of derivatives, the popular form of trading a new financial instrument derived from a conventional security. Finance increasingly uses computer modeling for this complex form of trading, thereby making computational finance an increasingly large part of the coursework. Courses also cover risk management and ethics. A comprehensive finance degree conveys not only how to nurture clients' investments but also how to protect clients from economic crises.

A finance degree is a ticket to a chaotic but thriving job market. Candidates work at large financial institutions, primarily banks, as researchers, analysts, and managers. They also work at financial exchanges and for the government studying and regulating the financial industry. Finally, a finance degree can lead to a position working with private investors, either at a hedge fund or on one's own, making investments for funds and clients. The only limit on what can be earned is the diligence and knowledge of the finance experts.
