FTCE Test Breakdown

The FTCE (Florida Teacher’s Certification Examination) is a two and a half hour examination covering four content areas. The largest block of time (100 minutes) is apportioned to the math section of the test. The other three components are focused upon the language arts areas. An essay test takes approximately fifty minutes. The reading section allows the test taker forty minutes, as does the English language skills portion of the test. The FTCE is required of all teachers seeking certification in the state of Florida. The FTCE General Knowledge Test requires an original essay, a reading comprehension exam, and the math exam (which includes scientific math).

The FTCE is supplemented with another test of classroom management skills, known as the teacher Professional Education Test. The teacher is also required to take an FTCE Subject Area Examination, or FTCE-SAE, in the area of his or her teaching specialty. For administrators, the additional requirement is known as the Florida Educational Leadership Examination (FELE).

Registering for the FTCE is easy, and may be done online, by mail, or by telephone. The test taker will be provided with the addresses of computer testing central locations. Similarly, those opting for the paper-based test will have the choice of a variety of locations in high schools, colleges, or community colleges. Some of the locations may be authorized to administer more than one version of the FTCE, but only a few testing centers administer all three of the FTCE battery of tests.

There is a time advantage in taking the computer-based versions of the FTCE exam, in that the test taker receives his or her official scores within two weeks of taking the test. Immediate results are available after the computer-based exam, but these scores are not official. The paper-based examination scores are mailed out within 30 days of the test date.

With regard to official test scores, the Florida test administrators will send the scores to the schools, colleges, or universities you have selected as soon as they are available. Official scores are also sent electronically to the Florida State Bureau of Educator Certification. The certification candidate may obtain a test preparation guide from his or her college bookstore. The guides may be ordered and purchased online as well. Since the specific qualifications and content are often updated to be consistent with Florida curricula, it is advisable to obtain a current guide for the FTCE.
