GMAT* CAT Exam Format
The Graduate Management Admission Test is currently offered in a computer-based format, which has a number of advantages for the test-taker. For one thing, computer-adaptive tests (CATs) enable a standardized version of the exam to be administered all across the world at times which are convenient to the test-taker. Many candidates feel that they are at their most brilliant in the morning, others in the afternoon; the GMAT CAT exam allows them to work when they are at their best. The computer-based version of the exam is also more adept at pinpointing the exact capability of the test-taker. When the exam was administered on paper, there was no way to adjust the difficulty of the questions to accommodate the individual candidate. Now, however, the GMAT CAT test is able to react instantaneously to the progress of the test-taker. This system of question selection has been fine-tuned over time by the GMAC. To begin with, every candidate is asked a question of moderate difficulty. If the candidate answers this question correctly, he will receive a slightly more difficult question. If he answers the first question incorrectly, he will receive a slightly less difficult question. This process repeats after every question: when the candidate is correct, he is challenged with a harder question; when he is incorrect, he is given a chance to redeem himself with an easier question. In this manner, the computer gradually zeroes in on the candidate's ability level. According to test experts, the computer-based version of the GMAT does a much better job of indicating the precise level of knowledge held by each candidate.
