The Graduate Management Admission Test is offered throughout the year at locations around the United States and the rest of the world. The new computer-based format of the exam means that students throughout the world receive a standardized product and can be assured that their scores are comparable to those of all the other students who sit for the exam. To fill out a GMAT application, visit the Graduate Management Admission Council website. There, you will find instructions for how to register by phone, fax, telephone, or the Internet. In order to register for the GMAT, you must be a college graduate or be about to obtain a degree, and you must pay $280. If after registering you elect to cancel or postpone your examination appointment, you may forfeit some of the exam fee or be assessed an additional fee. There are special arrangements available for disabled students. Again, the requisite forms can be found at the GMAC website. The GMAT ETS program is constantly being fine-tuned to provide an examination which accurately predicts success in graduate school. For this reason, some of the questions on the exam are pre-test questions, which do not count towards the candidate's score but rather are used to develop future versions of the exam. You will not be able to tell which questions are the pretest questions. The computer-based version of the exam automatically adjusts the difficulty of the questions depending on your success; if you are answering most of the questions correctly, therefore, you will be presented with increasingly difficult questions. Students should refrain from trying to guess their own performance during the exam, however. Research performed by the GMAC suggests that students who attempt to game the system in this way often see their performance suffer.
