The Quantitative section of the Graduate Management Admission Test is composed of 37 multiple-choice questions. Each question is accompanied by five answer choices. Most of the questions in this section are so-called problem-solving questions, in a format which will be familiar to anyone who has taken a standardized math test in the past. Close to half of the questions, however, are in a format unique to the GMAT. These are known as data sufficiency questions. In a data sufficiency question, the test taker is required not to answer the question, but simply to determine whether the question can be answered given the information contained in two numbered statements. Data sufficiency questions will draw on the same mathematical content as problem-solving questions: arithmetic, geometry, and basic algebra. On the GMAT calculator use is forbidden; you will be given a pencil and as much scratch paper as you need. Perhaps the best preparation for the Quantitative section of the exam would be completing some of the chapter tests at the back of a high school level math book. According to the Graduate Management Admission Council, the questions on the GMAT are similar in difficulty to those performed by juniors and seniors in high school. The exam does not include any questions at all in calculus, trigonometry, or statistics. Some of the questions on the exam may require you to analyze and interpret information from a drawing, table, or graph. Note that drawings are not necessarily made to scale; you should only calculate using information that is explicitly given in the exercise.
