GMAT* FAQ

Students who are beginning to prepare for the graduate management admission test need to know a few important things. First of all, students should know that the topics covered by the Quantitative section do not include calculus, trigonometry, or statistics. Many students waste valuable study time because they believe that the GMAT covers the same mathematical content as the GRE or SAT. On the contrary, the mathematical topics covered on the GMAT are restricted to arithmetic, geometry, and basic concepts of algebra. The amount of calculation involved on the exam is minimal; rather, the focus is on the application of critical reasoning skills to math problems. It is for this reason that the GMAT includes special data sufficiency questions, which target the candidate's ability to assess available evidence rather than his or her skill with mathematical operations. As for the Verbal section of the exam, it depends to a lesser extent than the SAT or GRE on the acquisition of an advanced vocabulary. Also, there are no analogies on the GMAT. You will have to know the basic conventions of standard written English in order to succeed on the sentence correction exercises, and you will need to demonstrate sophisticated critical and evaluative skills on the reading comprehension exercises. Again, though, the creators of the GMAT are primarily concerned with testing your critical reasoning and analytical skills. Finally, in your preparation for the Analytical Writing Assessment, you should be aware that all of the topics used on the GMAT are posted at the GMAC website. There is no excuse for failing to survey these topics in the weeks and months before the examination. You may have other questions about these sections of the exam, or about exam procedure as a whole. Extensive GMAT faq information is available at the website of the Graduate Management Admission Council.
