GMAT* Overview

As it is currently administered, the Graduate Management Admission Test is easy to understand and complete. As much as possible, the Graduate Management Admission Council has striven to make your knowledge and skill the only determinant of your success on the exam. In other words, you will not need any expert computing ability or specialized knowledge in a particular subject in order to do well on the exam. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to perform a brief GMAT overview before sitting for the test. You should know that the GMAT is divided into three distinct sections: Analytical Writing Assessment, Quantitative, and Verbal. The Quantitative and Verbal sections are composed entirely of multiple-choice questions, while the Analytical Writing Assessment requires you to complete two short essays. You are given 30 minutes for each of the essays, 75 minutes for the Quantitative section, and 75 minutes for the Verbal section. Most students have no trouble completing all of the sections within the time allotted; the GMAT length has been organized not to rush students, but rather to encourage students to work quickly and decisively. If you like, you can take a ten minute break in between the sections of the exam. During this time, you can go to the bathroom or walk around the testing center. You will not be allowed to leave the testing center building during your break.
