GMAT* Quantitative
The 37 questions that make up the GMAT quantitative section are of two varieties: problem-solving and data sufficiency. Problem-Solving questions are in a format that will be recognizable to you from any other multiple-choice mathematics test you have taken: you will be given a basic problem to solve, and five answers from which to choose. A GMAT data sufficiency question, on the other hand, may be slightly confusing to the first-time test-taker. A data sufficiency exercise is composed of a question followed by two numbered statements. You are not required to answer the question, but rather to determine whether the question can be answered given the information contained in the two statements. Every data sufficiency question has the same five answer choices, which can be summarized as follows: only the first statement is required to answer the question; only the second statement is required to answer the question; both statements are required to answer the question; either statement alone would be sufficient to answer the question; or the two statements combined are insufficient to answer the question. Again, note that you are not required to actually answer the question; many novice GMAT candidates waste valuable time calculating answers unnecessarily. For all of the GMAT quantitative questions, only a high-school level of mathematical knowledge is required. In order to succeed on this section, you should refresh your knowledge of basic topics in arithmetic, elementary algebra, and geometry. Some of the questions in the quantitative section may require the analysis of tables, graphs, or charts.
