Government Jobs

Nature of the Industry

Government jobs involve assisting government agencies in supplying transportation, utilities, safety, and other services to local citizens. Government jobs are classified by the area in which they serve: state, county, township, municipality, special district, or school district. However, these divisions can sometimes overlap. For example, a county can have more than one municipality or city in addition to several rural regions.

The government is the largest employer in the United States, but the number of local governments varies by state. For example, Illinois has many different local government agencies, but Hawaii has very few local government jobs available.

A projected rise in the availability of government jobs over the next several years can be attributed to population growth and increasing government responsibilities. Opportunities are especially good for workers in the safety and health areas.

Types of Jobs

Government jobs include opportunities for people with many different skills and educational backgrounds. There are positions for bus drivers, construction workers, recreational workers, maintenance workers, correctional officers, police officers, social workers, clerks, detectives, judges, librarians, and managers, to name a few.

Training and Education

In order to be successful in government jobs, you must be committed to the idea of community service and have skills in mathematics, technology, and verbal and written communication. For service jobs, you must have a high school diploma and be able to pass a series of specific skill tests or obtain certifications such as a commercial driver’s license. For managerial positions, you will need to have a bachelor’s degree in business, law, finance, or a related field. If you aspire to a position working in the executive or legislative areas of the government, you may need to be elected after meeting specific age, residency, and citizenship requirements.
