Health Care Jobs
Nature of the Industry
Healthcare jobs involve diagnosing, treating, and maintaining
the bodies and minds of patients. People in the healthcare industry can
treat patients ranging from newborn babies to elderly nursing home
residents.
Healthcare jobs can be found in five main areas:
- Hospitals care for patients from diagnosis through
treatment by running tests, prescribing medications, administering
therapy, or performing surgery.
- Private offices are run by individuals or groups and
provide specialized care in one medical area, such as dentistry or
nutritional counseling.
- Ambulatory services provide specialized outpatient care,
such as a kidney dialysis center or blood bank.
- Residential facilities are nursing homes, hospice care
centers, or healthcare offices that provide around-the-clock care for
people who are being treated for drug and alcohol addictions.
- Home healthcare services treat elderly patients in their
homes in order to prevent the need for residential care services.
Opportunities for people interested in healthcare jobs will
remain
strong over the next several decades. The health issues associated with
an aging population will increase the demand for medical care. A
greater awareness of the importance of preventative medicine will also
lead to new job opportunities for healthcare professionals.
Types of Jobs
Healthcare jobs include positions for many different types of
workers.
Doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses,
dentists, dental hygienists, nutritionists, physical therapists,
pathologists, podiatrists, optometrists, psychiatrists, pharmacists,
respiratory therapists, and other medical professionals are among the
types of workers who provide patient care. Administrative managers,
billing specialists, customer service managers, human resources
managers, medical records clerks, finance managers, and health
insurance managers do not treat illnesses, but help provide the
services that are required to make the facility run smoothly.
Training and Education
In order to obtain healthcare jobs, you must have skills in
science, technology, mathematics, and communication. Doctors and
dentists must have graduate degrees and extensive professional
training. Nurses and social workers need to have bachelor’s degrees in
a related field. Jobs such as emergency medical technicians and
laboratory technicians require you to have an associate’s degree.
Certain psychiatric care, physical therapy, or home health aide jobs
are available with a high school diploma and supervised on-the-job
experience.
