Hospitality Jobs

Nature of the Industry

Workers in the hospitality industry are responsible for helping people enjoy their travel experiences by providing clean accommodations, delicious meals, and a variety of recreational experiences. The hospitality industry serves people traveling on vacation as well as those who are traveling on business.

Hospitality jobs can be found in three major categories:

  • Accommodations such as hotels, inns, or campgrounds
  • Restaurants, bars, and fast food establishments
  • Recreation and entertainment facilities such as swimming pools, theme parks, casinos, and gyms

Full-service hotels provide many hospitality jobs, as these businesses often include restaurants, fitness centers, and other accommodations designed to make a guest’s stay more enjoyable. However, even a limited-service hotel still has a need for housekeepers, desk clerks, and other personnel to coordinate guest activities.

The growth of hospitality jobs is closely tied to the economy. When the economy is good, people have more leisure time and disposable income. When times are tough, people aren’t able to enjoy vacations on a regular basis and businesses cut down on the amount of time their employees are required to travel.

Types of Jobs

Hospitality jobs include employment for baggage clerks, hosts, housekeepers, concierges, desk clerks, bartenders, cooks, waiters, computer specialists, gaming workers, and security guards. Many positions are available for part-time and seasonal help, as the hospitality industry experiences higher levels of traffic during the summer months and close to major holidays such as Christmas.

Training and Education

Service jobs in the hospitality industry, such as desk clerks, housekeepers, or cooks, typically require a high school diploma and good communication skills. Administrative positions, such as hospitality jobs for accountants and hotel managers, typically require bachelor’s degrees in business, hospitality management, or another related field. Internships and other job experience may also be needed for these hospitality jobs.
