How to Register

To get started with the registration process, you’ll need to see what the specific rules for registration are for your school. You’ll generally be asked to pick a spring or fall testing date, but each school is different.

The fee for the HSPT will also differ for every school, but it’s usually around $20.

HSPT Scores

There are two types of scores used for this test: composite and normative. The final score you need to get will be different depending on your school of choice.

Composite Scores

The composite score gives schools an overall view of your performance on the test. This means that you’ll have to complete all sections of the test to receive this score.

There are three composite scores in total:

  • Total Cognitive Skills: This includes the scores from the Verbal and Quantitative subtests.
  • Total Basic Skills: This encompasses the scores from the Reading, Math, and Language subtests.
  • Composite: This is a combination of all the above areas – Verbal, Quantitative, Reading, Math, and Language.

Normative Scores

Normative scores provide some context for your performance by comparing it to how well other people did when they took the test.

There are five normative scores to consider:

  • National Percentile (NP) Rank: This ranks your scores against other test-takers on a national scale, with scores ranging from 1 to 99.
  • Local Percentile (LP) Rank: This is similar to the NP Rank, but it compares you to other test-takers on a local level.
  • Grade Equivalent (GE): This score estimates what grade level your performance generally corresponds to.
  • Cognitive Skills Quotient (CSQ): This score predicts future academic achievement, similar to an IQ score.
  • Standard Score (SS): This score ranges from 200 to 800, providing a frame of reference for comparing scores accurately among different groups.
