Information Technology JobsNature of the Industry Technology is essential to the survival of modern businesses. Companies use computers for everything from managing payroll to recruiting new customers through their business website. This makes workers who specialize in information technology very valuable. The structure of information technology departments typically follows an assigned hierarchy: chief officer, director, and project manager. Opportunities for information technology jobs can include positions for engineers, programmers, computer systems administrators, technical writers, software publishers, consultants, and computer scientists. Training and Education Information technology jobs require you to be comfortable working with computers and have strong skills in mathematics, communication, and leadership. In smaller companies, a few jobs are available for people who have an associate’s degree and on-the-job training. However, most positions require a bachelor’s degree in a field such as information science, management information systems, or computer science. Advancing to upper management positions typically requires you to obtain a graduate degree such as a master’s of business administration (MBA) with an emphasis in technology. Job seekers may also be required to have certifications in specific technology or software programs.
