Insurance Jobs
Nature of the Industry
Insurance jobs involve helping customers protect their assets
from accidents, diseases, theft, and acts of nature. By providing
appropriate insurance coverage, people in this industry help their
customers receive financial reimbursement after a tragedy.
Insurance jobs can be divided into the following specialty areas:
- Carriers: Insurance carriers
sell policies and assume the financial risk associated with a customer
making a claim. Primary carriers underwrite the policies, while
insurance carriers assume the risk.
- Agencies and brokerages:
Insurance jobs with related services include working in areas such as
funds administration, claims processing, investigation, claims
adjustment, and risk management.
- Related Services: Management
accounting jobs involve working with just one company to oversee
financial records.
Insurance jobs are expected to increase at a below average rate in
future years due to mergers, downsizing, and technological advances
that result in greater efficiency processing claims. The best prospects
will be for jobs in the health insurance industry.
Types of Jobs
The insurance industry includes jobs for administrative clerks,
auditors, accountants, computer analysts, programmers, claims clerks,
data processors, sales managers, underwriters, agents, secretaries,
management analysts, engineers, bookkeepers, appraisers, and actuaries.
Training and Education
Insurance jobs require you to have skills in technology, mathematics,
and communication. Support clerks need to have a high school diploma or
an associate’s degree accompanied by on-the-job training. Management,
business, or financial jobs require a bachelor’s degree in a related
field. Insurance jobs that involve specializing in an area such as
underwriting may require certification through organizations such as
the Insurance Institute of America. State licensing in claims
examination, investigation, sales, or adjustment may be needed for some
positions.
