IT Degree

Information technology, or IT, is the field that encompasses computers, their networks, their connection to the Internet, and the humans that run all of the above. IT professionals work with software, hardware, and networks. Jobs in the field require expertise but subsequently pay very well. The best way to gain the expertise required to break into the IT field is to obtain an IT degree.

There are three major career tracks in information technology: networks, systems, and databases. Network administrators manage a company or organization's computer network, which can be defined as the ways computers communicate. Intranets connect computers in a closed system, like a business, allowing workers to simultaneously edit a document or have shared access to information. The Internet allows connection on an open system to the entire world so that business and organizations can communicate with one another. Systems administrators make sure that computers are running efficiently and safely. They guarantee that systems run optimally so companies stay connected and productive. Database administrators are in charge of storage and management of information. They use software to collect, cull, and interpret data.

All three career tracks in IT are knowledge intensive. An IT degree is a comprehensive package that imparts an overview of all three subjects and also gives working knowledge of specific software and computer products and their uses. A student graduating with an associate's degree will have an understanding of networks, systems, and database management, and also computer security. A candidate receiving a Bachelor's or master's degree in IT covers more specific material and gets extra credit in their career track.
