Legal Jobs

Nature of the Industry

Legal jobs involve interpreting and applying the laws to which citizens must adhere in order to keep society safe and organized. Lawyers, often referred to as attorneys, provide clients with legal advice and prepare presentations for the court in areas such as criminal law, finance, international law, or civil rights. Paralegals, sometimes called legal assistants, help lawyers by drafting court motions, researching case law, completing paperwork, and keeping the office organized. Judges rule on cases and decide the proper punishment for violation of the law.

Growth in the availability of legal jobs is expected to remain at an average to slightly above average rate over the next several years. The complexity of the legal system as well as population growth will increase the need for people in the legal profession. Paralegals are anticipated to be in high demand, as employers try to cut costs by assigning extra duties to these workers.

Types of Jobs

Legal jobs include opportunities for lawyers, judges, judicial workers, clerks, and paralegals. Most lawyers and paralegals work in private practice, but there are many opportunities for people who want to pursue careers in public interest law. Salaries are lower for government positions, but there is often less stress and greater flexibility for these legal jobs.

Training and Education

In order to be successful in legal jobs, you must have a strong knowledge of history, economics, government, and public speaking. Excellent communication skills and fluency in a foreign language are highly desired. Paralegals must have an associate’s degree or certification through an organization such as the American Alliance of Paralegals. Lawyers must earn a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and pass the bar exam. Judges are either elected or appointed officials who have previously worked as lawyers.
