NCIDQ Test Information
There are a number of benefits to passing the National Council for Interior Design Qualification Examination. This exam is required for licensure in all NCIDQ jurisdictions, and is required for membership in a number of professional organizations. The NCIDQ Examination has been developed by the NCIDQ to ensure that professionals have the minimum competency in the field. The NCIDQ focuses on six content areas: programming; schematic design; design development; contract documents; contract administration; and professional practice. The test is divided into two sections of 150 multiple-choice questions and a practicum section.
The first multiple-choice section is entitled Principles and Practices of Interior Design, and focuses on the following content areas: programming (41 questions); schematic design (40 questions); and design development (44 questions). The second multiple-choice section is entitled Contract Documents and Administration and focuses on the following content areas: contract documents (35 questions); contract administration (32 questions); and professional practice (33 questions). In the practicum section, entitled Schematics and Design Development, the candidate will receive a program for a multi-functional facility, and he or she will have to interpret the program into schematics, produce plan drawings, and develop appropriate specifications. Candidates will receive their exam scores in the mail approximately 14 weeks after the exam. The score report will contain a score for each section on a scale of 200 to 800; in order to pass, an individual will need to obtain at least a 500. For the multiple-choice sections, the scaled score is derived from the raw score, or number of questions answered correctly. Each multiple-choice section contains 25 questions that are unscored and are used for the development of future versions of the exam. The practicum section is assessed by a board of experts. The NCIDQ exam is a two-day exam. It is administered by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification at locations around the country; to register, visit the NCIDQ website.
