In order to be certified or licensed as a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant, individuals must pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) or the National Physical Therapy Assistant Examination (NPTAE).These exams were developed by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy to establish a minimum level of competency for physical therapist and physical therapist assistants. The exam for physical therapists consists of 250 multiple-choice questions, and must be completed within 5 hours. The major content areas covered by the exam for physical therapists are as follows: Patient Examination (52 questions); Evaluation, Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Outcomes (45 questions); Intervention (83 questions); and Standards of Care (20 questions). The exam for physical therapist assistants consists of 200 multiple-choice questions, and must be completed within 4 hours. The major content areas covered by the exam for physical therapist assistants are as follows: Tests and Measures (32 questions); Intervention (90 questions); and Standards of Care (28 questions).
Each of the exams contains pretesting questions that are not scored and are used to develop future versions of the exam. Exam scores are determined by the number of questions answered correctly. This raw score is converted into a score on a scale of 200 to 800. There is no deduction for incorrect answers, so candidates should guess at those questions they do not know. The examination is scored by the FSBPT and results are given by this body to the relevant licensing authority. The passing score is typically a 600. The NPTE is a computerized exam. It is administered by Thomson Prometric throughout the year at locations around the country. To register, visit the FSBPT website.
