Nursing Schools

In the health care industry, nurses are relied on for much of a hospital or other institution's day-to-day operations. The work is increasingly knowledge dependent. The best way to attain a well-compensated position as a nurse is to complete a degree from a nursing school. In this profession, education is not only desirable but also necessary.

Many nursing schools offer both graduate and undergraduate degrees, with some of them including associate's degrees as an intriguing option for those coming out of high school. Nursing programs teach a core curriculum of classes, like anatomy and physiology, human development, and biology. They also allow students to specialize in the kind of care that they wish to practice. Students may take courses in family and child nursing, psychosocial nursing, community nursing, or other programs that prepare nurses to work in a given health field.

Most importantly, nursing schools allow students hands-on training with patients and doctors. Many nursing schools are attached to hospitals and health care centers where students provide care under the guidance of teachers and mentors. It is this aspect of nursing schools that is essential to building skills, such as dealing with patients, medical ethics, and understanding patient behavior.

The job prospects for candidates with degrees from nursing schools are fairly consistent in the current economic climate. This stems mostly from the variety of opportunities nursing presents. Besides working in hospitals, nurses work in private practice; in large institutions, such as schools; and also provide care and counseling on an independent basis. Even with changes in health care dominating the coming years, the demand for nurses should remain strong.
