PHR& SPHR Test

The PHR and SPHR exams are offered by the HRCI organization. The exams are multiple choice and consist of 200 scored questions plus 25 pretest questions randomly distributed throughout the exam (a total of 225 questions). Each question lists four possible answers, only one of which is the correct or “best possible answer.” The answer to each question can be derived independently of the answer to any other question. Four hours are allotted to complete the exam.

The questions on the PHR and SPHR examinations are divided into six functional areas of human resources. For the PHR examination, the breakdown is as follows: 12% strategic management, 26% workforce planning and employment, 15% human resources development, 20% compensation and benefits, 21% employee and labor relations, and 6% occupational health, safety, and security. For the SPHR examination, the breakdown is as follows: 26% strategic management, 16% workforce planning and employment, 13% human resources development, 16% compensation and benefits, 24% employee and labor relations, and 5% occupational health, safety, and security. The PHR exam has questions focused mainly on a technical and operational level, whereas the SPHR exam has questions focused mainly on a strategic and policy level.

The PHR and SPHR exams each consist of 225 questions. Of these questions, 200 are scored, and 25 are non-scored pretest questions. The pretest questions are used to aid in the development of future exams. Each question has four possible choices, and the correct or best choice is to be chosen. There is no penalty for guessing, and any questions that are not answered are considered to be incorrect. The scores for the exam can range from 100 to 700, and a passing score is 500. The test is scored on a scale. Test takers have four hours to complete the examination.

In order to prepare for the examination, there are several things that may help a prospective test taker. Prior to taking the test, taking an online assessment exam (found online at HRCI's website) can be helpful. This exam consists of former test questions. Reading the materials about the exam (found at online at HRCI's website) can also be of use. Various textbooks and other materials can be found in bookstores and online that can also aid in preparation. During the exam, it is recommended to answer all easy questions first, and then come back and answer the more difficult questions. It should be remembered that there is no penalty for guessing on the exam.
