Praxis II Test Review
The Praxis II Elementary Education exam (0014) is a comprehensive and rigorous examination for prospective elementary school teachers. The exam has four major content areas: reading/language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science.
In the social studies content area, there are six subjections: geography, anthropology, and sociology (30%); world history (10%); United States history (30%); government, citizenship, and democracy (10%); economics (10%); and social studies as inquiry and social studies processes (10%). The geography, anthropology, and sociology subsection addresses world and regional geography; the interaction of physical and human systems; the uses of geography; and how people of different cultural backgrounds interact with their environment, self, family, neighborhoods, and communities. The world history and United States history subsections of the Praxis II Elementary Education exam (0014) cover all of the most important events and people in history, in particular those that are likely to appear in an elementary school curriculum. The government, citizenship, and democracy subsection addresses the following subjects: the nature, purpose, and forms of government; key documents and speeches in the history of the United States; and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in a democracy. The economics subsection addresses key terms and basic concepts of economics; the effects of economics on population, resources, and technology; and the government's role in economics and the impact of economics on government. Finally, the social studies as inquiry and social studies processes subsection includes the use of resources and research material in social studies.
The science content area of the Praxis II Elementary Education exam (0014) has five subsections: earth science (30%), life science (30%), physical science (30%), science in personal and social perspectives (5%), and science as inquiry and science processes (5%). The earth science subsection covers the structure and processes of the Earth system; Earth history; Earth and the universe; and Earth patterns, cycles, and changes. The life science subsection covers the structure and function of living systems; reproduction and heredity; change over time in living things; regulation and behavior; unity and diversity of life, adaptation, and classification; and the interdependence of organisms. The physical science subsection addresses the physical and chemical properties and structure of matter, forces and motions, energy, and the interactions of energy and matter. The science in personal and social perspectives subsection covers personal health and science as a human endeavor, process, and career. Finally, the science as inquiry and science processes subsection includes the use of resource and research material in science and the unifying processes of science.
