Nature of the Industry

Quality control workers help to make sure the products that companies sell meet customer expectations.

Quality control jobs can be grouped into five functions:

• Inspectors: These quality control jobs involve making sure goods are the correct size and have the right working parts.
• Testers: The job of a tester is to verify how a product should perform for the customer.
• Sorters: These quality control jobs involve grouping products into categories based on features such as size or color.
• Samplers: The job of a sampler is to test small batches of a product to make sure it is meeting the correct specifications.
• Weighers:These quality control jobs involve weighing the materials used in the production process to make sure all items are exactly the same.

Opportunities for people interested in quality control jobs will increase at a below moderate rate, due to a generalized decline in the manufacturing industry. However, quality control job prospects will be stronger in the medical equipment and pharmaceutical areas.

Types of Jobs

Quality control jobs include positions for sorters, testers, weighers, inspectors, machine operators, mechanics, and samplers. There is also a need for managers and administrative clerks to oversee and organize this work.

Training and Education

To be considered for a quality control job, strong skills in communication, technology, design, and science are essential. You must also be able to comprehend and analyze blueprints, data, and technical manuals. Entry-level positions are available for high school graduates who are willing to complete on-the-job training. However, associate’s degrees or certification through the American Society for Quality may be required for advancement in the field.
