Real Estate Jobs

Nature of the Industry

Owning a home or a business is often considered to be part of the “American Dream,” so it’s not surprising that the real estate industry provides many jobs. Real estate jobs involve helping people buy and sell homes, as well as commercial properties.

The real estate industry includes positions for brokers and agents. Both jobs involve working with clients to make recommendations regarding the purchase of property, zoning, financing, and pricing, but brokers have additional managerial responsibilities. A broker has the license legally needed to be able to supervise a real estate firm, but an agent must be employed or contracted by a broker.

Opportunities for people interested in real estate jobs are anticipated to grow at an above average rate. Population growth and the popularity of real estate as an investment have led to a greater demand for realtor services, especially for professionals who have strong networking skills.

Types of Jobs

The real estate industry includes jobs for realtors as well as positions for appraisers, association managers, brokers, mortgage specialists, and sales agents. Income for many real estate professionals is often erratic, however. Many real estate jobs involve being paid on commission, which requires working long hours in order to secure the necessary sales.

Training and Education

Candidates for real estate jobs need to possess skills in ethics, organization, and communication. In order to become licensed as a realtor, you must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma, and be able to pass a test regarding your state’s real estate laws. A college degree is not necessary for real estate jobs, but a background in finance, business, accounting, marketing, statistics, economics, law, and communications is desirable. To advance in the field, many people take professional development courses through the National Association of Realtors.
