Special Education Degree

Special education is the field of education that deals with learning differences. Most students thrive under a regime of traditional educational techniques. Many young people, however, have challenges that need to be addressed by expert educators using specialized curricula. Children and young adults with developmental problems, severe emotional disabilities, and milder learning differences can benefit from the tutelage of teachers with special education degrees.

There are close to 100,000 public schools and about half as many private schools in the United States, and special education is provided in classrooms, through the use of individual aids, and through one-on-one instruction by learning specialists. Special education does not stop with primary and secondary education. Post-secondary students also require aid, support, and special curricula to succeed. A special education degree is similar to specializing in a particular kind of medicine. Knowledge of the discipline as a whole, in this case education, is an important part of the curriculum. Teachers will study traditional classroom techniques and stages of human development. In addition, training will be given in psychology, behavioral issues, and the history of special education. Most importantly, special education degree programs allow candidates to get hands-on training in special education classrooms or as aides to individual students. More than other disciplines of education, special education requires experience and ability. Special education degree courses can impart the knowledge necessary, but candidates must be keen to work with the particular community of students that comprise special education. Compassion, patience, and perseverance are all prerequisites for this career, which is equally demanding and rewarding.
