TExES 101 Generalist EC-4 Exam Review

The TExES 101 Generalist EC-4 exam is a comprehensive and rigorous assessment for prospective teachers of all subjects at the elementary school level in the state of Texas. The fine arts, health, and physical education section only constitutes about 15% of the test, but it covers a broad range of topics. It is important for you to research each of these topics thoroughly in advance of the exam. The fine arts component of this content area includes discussion of the development of ideas from the perception of self, others, and natural and human-made environments. It also includes the skills and techniques needed for personal and creative expression; the cultivation of students' appreciation of art history and diverse cultures; the analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of artwork; and cognitive and artistic development as it relates to art instruction and assessment. The music component of the TExES 101 Generalist EC-4 exam includes questions about visual and aural knowledge of musical perception and performance; music notation; music history; and the relationship of music to history, society, and culture.

Test-takers also need to know about musical compositions, performances, and experiences; musical instruction that enhances knowledge, skills, and appreciation; and student assessment and the use of assessment results to design instruction and promote student progress. The health component of TExES 101 Generalist EC-4 exam includes questions about the relationship between health and behavior and the factors influencing health and behavior, planning and implementation of effective school health instruction, and the integration of health instruction with other content areas.

Finally, the physical education component addresses a wide variety of topics, including various movement skills; principles and benefits of a healthy, physically-active lifestyle; and the use of individual and group motivation and behavior in the creation of a safe, productive learning environment. The physical education component also addresses the promotion of self-management, self-motivation, and social skills through participation in physical activities; techniques for supporting students' physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development; techniques for providing equitable and appropriate instruction for all students in a diverse society; and effective, developmentally-appropriate instructional strategies and communication techniques to prepare physically-educated individuals. The TExES 101 Generalist EC-4 exam was developed by the Texas Education Agency and the Educational Testing Service.
