Veterinary Jobs
Nature of the Industry
The veterinary industry involves working to maintain, treat, and
diagnose animals throughout their lives. Veterinary jobs can involve
treating livestock, pets, horses, birds, and exotic animals. Some of
the tasks associated with veterinary jobs include preventative care,
controlling disease, administering vaccines, and monitoring nutritional
needs.
Veterinary jobs are expected to increase at a high rate over the
next decade, especially for workers who specialize in caring for cats.
The increase in pet ownership and a better understanding of animal
safety will contribute to new opportunities in the field. There will
also be jobs available for veterinarians who want to focus on
biomedical research instead of directly caring for animals.
Types of Jobs
Veterinary jobs include opportunities for veterinarians, veterinary
technologists, veterinary technicians, animal care and service workers,
animal welfare and safety workers, disease control workers,
epidemiologists, meat and poultry inspectors, public health officers,
and research assistants. Jobs can be found at animal health clinics,
animal shelters, pet stores, farms, racetracks, zoos, and aquariums.
Veterinarians, like doctors, may also choose to open their own private
practices. If a veterinarian opens a private practice, they make take pet insurance claims.
Training and Education
Skills in mathematics, science, communication, and business are
needed in order to be considered a good candidate for veterinary jobs.
Lower-level positions as service workers, technicians, or technologists
can be obtained with a high school diploma or training from a
vocational school. However, a veterinarian must possess a doctoral
degree in veterinary medicine and the appropriate state licenses. To be
admitted to a veterinary school, you must possess a bachelor's degree
and scores from a graduate examination such as the Graduate Record
