Register for your exam at an official testing site. Make sure that your schedule gives you two and a half hours to take your test without rushing. The test uses a computer-based format with 110 multiple choice questions. Use the WEST-E Music: Instrumental practice questions to give you an idea of the kinds of questions that you can expect to find on your test.
To do well on your test, you will need to study five domain areas of subject content. About 19% of your test will cover Aural Skills. To do well on this section of the test you will listen to recorded examples and mark your answers to questions about the elements of music, characteristics of Western, U.S., and world music, and the elements of performance. You will also be tested on Music Theory, which makes up about 19% of your test. For this portion of your test, you will need to understand musical notation, melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic elements. Another 14% of your test covers Music History and Culture. For this section you will need to know the history of Western music from the Middle Ages to 1750 and from 1750 to the present.
You will also need to understand U.S. and world music. The next content area you will need to know is the Music Creation and Performance area, which makes up 33% of the test. This section will test your ability to compose, improvise and arrange music, as well as identify your knowledge among the different sections of a standard band. The final 14% of your test covers Music and Other Disciplines. Study up on how to show understanding of music as a form of communication, how to analyze music in relation to other arts and other academic disciplines, as well as have a working knowledge of careers in music. The WEST-E Music: Instrumental practice test will help you gauge whether you have the confidence to take and pass your test with an overall score of 240.
