What do the Standards Cover?

There are six Common Core State Standards for grade 10 ELA instruction, which are grouped into three main areas:


Conventions of Standard English
2 standards

  1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
  • Using parallel structure
  • Using various phrases and clauses to convey specific meaning and add variety to writing or presentations
  1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
  • Using a semicolon to connect closely related independent clauses
  • Using a colon to introduce a list or quotation
  • Using correct spelling

Knowledge of Language
1 standard

  1. Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening.
  • Writing and editing work so it conforms to a style manual’s guidelines

Vocabulary Acquisition and Use
3 standards

  1. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
  • Determining the meaning of words and phrases using context
  • Using patterns of word changes that indicate different meanings or parts of speech
  • Determining/clarifying the precise meaning or part of speech of a word
  • Verifying the definition of a word or phrase
  1. Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
  • Interpreting figures of speech using context
  • Analyzing nuances in the meaning of words with similar definitions
  1. Acquire and use general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.
