TSI Math Practice Test

No. The TSI test is usually only given to students who do not appear to be ready for college-level work. Factors such as your SAT score, your ACT exam score, your STAAR score, and your EOC score influence whether or not you need to take the TSI test. In order to avoid taking the TSI Mathematics and Statistics test, you will need to score at least a 530 on the SAT, and for the ACT you will need to score at least a 19. For those taking the STAAR exam, you will need to score 2000 points on the writing and reading sections, and 4000 points on the mathematics section.

The TSI test is computer-based and is composed of 20 multiple-choice questions. The test is computer adaptive. This means that your answers affect the difficulty of the test. There is no pass or fail score for the TSI exam. In order to avoid having to take remedial classes, a test taker will need to score at least a 350 on the TSI test.

The TSI Mathematics and Statistics exam tests you on the following:

• Elementary Algebra and Functions – this section contains 6 questions on the placement test and 10 questions on the diagnostic test. You will be tested on algebraic expressions and equations; word problems and applications; and linear equations, inequalities, and systems.
• Intermediate Algebra and Functions – there are 9 questions on the placement test and 10 questions on the diagnostic test. This section will test your knowledge of expressions, equations, and functions; rational and exponential expressions, equations, and functions; and quadratic and other polynomial expressions, equations, and functions.
• Geometry and Measurement – this section contains 2 questions on the placement test and 10 questions on the diagnostic test. You will be tested on plane geometry; measurements including linear, three-dimensional, and area; transformations and symmetry; and modeling and applications.
• Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability – there are 3 items on the placement test and 10 items on the diagnostic test. You will be tested on statistical measurements; interpreting categorical and quantitative data; and probabilistic reasoning.

Be prepared to encounter graphs and charts. Be sure to pay extra attention to word problems and utilize the scratch paper provided to you. If you do well on the placement test, you will not need to take the diagnostic test.

On the day of the exam, be sure to arrive at least fifteen minutes early. You will need to have with you a government-issued photo identification. Cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed in the testing room with you. You will be given anywhere between three to five hours to complete the test.

Unfortunately, no. You are not allowed to bring a calculator on the day of the exam. However, there may be an onscreen calculator for you to use.
