The EXPLORE test is administered to students as they enter high school. It identifies student aptitudes and helps high school administrators develop appropriate individual coursework and career planning programs.
The EXPLORE test is administered during the course of the normal school day. It has four components: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science.
The English section consists of 40 multiple-choice items, which must be completed within 30 minutes. The English language skills covered include usage/mechanics (25 questions) and rhetorical skills (15 questions).

The Reading section consists of 30 multiple-choice items, which must be completed within 30 minutes. This section focuses on reading comprehension skills, including noticing details and analyzing information.
The Science section of the EXPLORE test consists of 28 multiple-choice items, which must be completed within 30 minutes. The questions in this section cover the life sciences, earth/space sciences, and physical sciences. There are three question formats in the Science section: data representation (in which students must use information from graphs, tables, etc.); research summaries (in which students must organize and analyze information from the descriptions of several related experiments); and conflicting viewpoints (in which students must consider two or more inconsistent hypotheses).
The content of the EXPLORE test is similar to that of the ACT. Besides the academic assessment described above, the EXPLORE test also includes an interest inventory (72 questions about career choices), a background information questionnaire, and a needs assessment (to diagnose the needs of the student). All of these components make the EXPLORE test a useful assessment tool for students as they matriculate into high school.
