What is NES?
The National Evaluation Series (NES) is a teacher certification testing program developed and administered by the Evaluation Systems group of Pearson.
Unlike state-specific testing programs such as the TExES (Texas) or FTCE (Florida), the NES is designed as a national program that individual states can adopt. Because the NES is adopted at the state level, the specific exams required and their passing scores can vary from state to state.
There are three main categories of NES test:
- Content Area Assessments
These tests cover a wide range of teaching fields across all grade levels, including English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, world languages, special education, early childhood education, and many others. - Professional Knowledge Assessments (APK)
These tests evaluate your understanding of pedagogy, instructional strategies, assessment, and classroom management. - Essential Academic Skills (EAS) Assessments
These tests evaluate foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics that are considered essential for all educators.
The specific exam(s) you need to take will depend on your licensure pathway. Check your state’s department of education or educator preparation program to confirm your requirements.
