AEPA Test Review
The Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments (AEPA) are administered to prospective educators who want to become certified to work in the Arizona public schools. Teachers, teaching assistants, administrators, and other school personnel are required to take at least one AEPA exam before becoming eligible for employment. These assessments are aligned with Arizona Academic Standards, Arizona Professional Teaching Standards, and Arizona Professional Administrative Standards. The AEPA has five basic test categories: Professional Knowledge Tests; Subject Knowledge Tests; the Constitutions of the United States and Arizona Test; Administrator Tests; and the Basic Skills Test.

There are three AEPA Professional Knowledge Tests for Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary educators. Each of these tests contains 100 selected-response questions and three written performance assignments. Prospective teachers usually have to take a Professional Knowledge Test and a Subject Knowledge Test in their area of professional interest. The AEPA Subject Knowledge Tests are made up of 100 selected-response questions and one written performance assignment; the only exceptions to this format are the French, German, and Spanish tests, which are composed of 55 selected-response questions, a written expression performance assignment, and an oral expression performance assignment.
The Constitutions of the United States and Arizona Test is made up of 100 selected-response questions. There are three AEPA Administrator Tests, for Supervisors, Superintendents, and Principals. The Supervisor test is composed of 100 selected-response questions and one written performance assignment, while the Superintendent and Principal tests are composed of 100 selected-response questions and four written performance assignments (two related to a given case study, one to an educational issue, and one which requires the creation of a work product). The AEPA Basic Skills Test includes Reading Comprehension (42 selected-response questions), Mathematics (42 selected-response questions), and Writing (42 selected-response questions and one written performance assignment) components.
