Subject-Specific TEAS Practice Tests

What’s on the TEAS 7?

Questions: 170
Time limit: 209 minutes

First, let’s talk about the questions on the TEAS. There are 170 questions total, but only 150 of the questions will count toward your final score. Why is that?

Unscored Questions
The 20 unscored questions on the TEAS are called “pretest” questions. ATI adds these questions to the test so they can determine if it’s a good question to add to future versions of the test.

The trick is that you won’t have any way of knowing which questions are scored and which ones are pretest questions. They will appear just like the other questions throughout the test.

The time limit for the TEAS is 209 minutes, which is just about 3.5 hours. In addition to the 209 minutes, you will be allowed to take a 10-minute break as soon as you finish the Math section. The timer is paused during this break, so take advantage of the break and take some deep breaths before you start the next section of the test!

READING

It may seem odd that you will be tested on your reading skills, but think about how often you will have to utilize reading on a daily basis as a nurse! To ensure your reading skills are up to par, you’ll be tested on three specific areas:

MATHEMATICS

Just like your reading skills, your math skills are something you will need to utilize frequently on a daily basis as a nurse, whether it’s calculating dosages or keeping track of patient’s vital rates. Here’s what topics are covered in this section:

Numbers & Algebra (18 scored questions)
Measurement & Data (16 scored questions)

SCIENCE
50 questions

Being familiar with various aspects of science is crucial as a nurse, especially when it comes to human anatomy and biology. There are four main areas that the Science section will cover:

Human Anatomy and Physiology (18 scored questions)
Biology (9 scored questions)
Chemistry (8 scored questions)
Scientific Reasoning (9 scored questions)

ENGLISH & LANGUAGE USAGE

Similarly to the Reading section, you may be wondering what an English Language section is doing on a nursing exam. Well, think about how often you’ll need to utilize clear communication skills and how many times you’ll need to coherently write things down!

To assess your English skills, this section of the TEAS covers these topics:

Alternate Question Types

If you’re taking the paper-and-pencil version of the TEAS, every question will be multiple-choice, meaning you will have to select one correct answer out of four or more answer choices.

If you’re taking the computerized version of the TEAS 7, you will still see some multiple-choice questions, but there are also four additional types of questions to watch out for.

Multiple Select

Multiple-select questions are similar to multiple-choice questions. However, instead of selecting just one correct answer, these questions allow you to select multiple correct answers.

Hot Spot

For hot spot questions, you’ll be shown a question and an image that has 4-6 clickable areas. All you have to do is select the area on the image that correctly answers the question.

Ordered Response

For ordered response questions, you’ll be shown a list of items that have been scrambled into a random order. These items will be in a box on the left side of the screen, and there will be an empty box on the right side. All you need to do is click and drag the items on the left side to the right side and put the items in the correct order.

Supply Answer

For supply answer questions, you’ll be asked to type your answer into a text box. Some of these questions will be “fill-in-the-blank” questions, and some will just be normal questions.

How to Register

To register for the TEAS 7, visit ATI’s website and click “register now.” The steps you take during the registration process will be different depending on whether you want to take an in-person test or a remote online test.

When you submit your registration, you will need to pay the testing fee. The fee will be slightly different depending on which state you take the test in.

How is the TEAS Scored

Once you have completed the test, the hard part is over!

If you took the computerized/online version of the test, you’ll have access to your scores as soon as the test is over. If you took the paper-and-pencil version, you’ll receive your scores within 24-48 hours.

One of the perks of the TEAS test is that there is technically no way to “fail” the test! How is that possible? Well, because your TEAS scores are used by schools as an evaluation tool, there is no predetermined passing score to achieve. Different nursing programs will be looking for different TEAS scores, so what counts as “passing” is totally up to those programs.

When you look at your score report, you’ll notice that there are two different types of scores listed:

Total Score: this is the percentage of questions you answered correctly
Content Area Scores: these are the percentage of questions you answered correctly in each section of the test

ATI will automatically send your scores to the institution you selected when you registered to take the test. You will be allowed to send your scores to a different school later on if you’d like.

Retaking the TEAS

If you didn’t get a passing score on your first try, that’s okay! The school(s) that you are applying to will let you know how many times you can retake the test. Usually, you can take it up to three times per year.

Keep in mind that you will have to pay the full testing fee every time you retake the test.

What is on the TEAS?

The TEAS uses four subjects to evaluate your basic knowledge. These include Mathematics, Science, English and Language Usage, and Reading.

What is the composite score on the TEAS test?

The composite score, or main score, is the combined scores of each section of the TEAS test. It is also known as the Adjusted Individual Score.

How long are the TEAS test results good for?

Your TEAS test results are good for 24 months after the test is taken.

Can you use a calculator on the TEAS?

You can use a calculator on the TEAS. One will be provided for you whether you take the test online or in person at a testing center.

Is the TEAS test all multiple-choice?

The paper-and-pencil version of the TEAS 7 is a multiple-choice test that contains 170 questions. The computerized version of the TEAS 7 contains five different question types:

Multiple-Choice: Multiple-choice questions provide four answer choices, with only one option available to select as the correct answer. In addition to text, some questions include charts, exhibits, and graphics.
Multiple-Select: Multiple-select questions provide four or more answer choices, and more than one answer choice may be correct. For these questions, a prompt appears, asking you to “Select all that Apply.” To correctly answer a question, you must select all correct answers. If you select any incorrect answer choices and/or do not select all of the correct answer choices, that question is scored as incorrect; no partial credit is given.
Supply Answer: Supply answer questions do not provide answer choices. Instead, the question asks you to “fill in the blank” or to simply answer the question provided. Words and numbers are both acceptable as answers.
Hot Spot: Hot spot questions provide an image containing between two and five clickable areas. You must click on the area of the image that correctly answers the question.
Ordered Response: Ordered response questions require you to correctly order a set of given responses. Each question provides between four and six responses, and you must drag each option from a box on the left to a box on the right. If any response option is out of order, the entire question is scored as incorrect; no partial credit is given.

How long do you have to take the TEAS?

The TEAS has a time limit of 209 minutes (3 hours and 29 minutes).

Can you retake the TEAS?

You can retake the TEAS after a waiting period of at least 30 days. Some schools require longer waiting periods.
