What is CSET?

The California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) are designed to ensure that individuals seeking licensure as educators in California have the knowledge and skills necessary to perform effectively in the state’s public school system.

There are five main types of CSET exam:

  • Multiple Subjects
This test is for candidates pursuing a multiple-subject teaching credential, which allows teaching most subjects in a self-contained classroom (typically elementary school).
  • Single Subject
These tests cover a wide range of teaching fields across all grade levels, including English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, world languages, special education, early childhood education, and many others.
  • Writing Skills
This test can be used in combination with Multiple Subjects test to satisfy the state basic skills requirement as an alternative to the CBEST.
  • Preliminary Educational Technology
This test is only required for those who completed a teacher preparation program outside of California.
  • World Languages
These tests are used to fulfill the subject-matter requirement for the bilingual authorization.

The specific exams you need to take will depend on your licensure pathway. Check the CTC website or consult with your educator preparation program to confirm your requirements.
