You’re finally here. You are ready to take the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments Superintendent Subtests I and II Exams. However, before you are allowed to step into that dream job, you must pass both the AEPA Superintendent Subtests I and II Exams, AZ180 and AZ280, as required by the Arizona State Board of Education.
The AEPA Superintendent Subtests I and II Exams each require a passing score of 240. Testers are given three hours and thirty minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions and complete two written performance assignments per subtest. Tests are available year-round, and results are sent out 2-6 weeks from the test date to the e-mail provided upon registering for the AEPA Superintendent Subtests I and II Exams.
The AEPA Superintendent Subtest I, AZ180, has two main subareas: Visionary Leadership, Collaboration, and Educational Contexts and Culture of Achievement and Instructional Leadership. The objectives are weighed at 60% from the selected-response items and 40% from the constructed-responses. Both subareas count equally.
The Visionary Leadership, Collaboration, and Educational Contexts subarea tests your understanding of how to develop and implement a shared district vision to promote continuous and sustainable improvement in student learning and achievement.
In addition, in this subarea, your understanding of political, social economic, and cultural contexts of education will be tested. The last thing this subarea will see is if you know how to use collaboration skills to build constructive relationships with members of the district governing board and other stakeholders inside and outside the district.
The second subarea in the Superintendent Subtest I is Culture of Achievement and Instructional Leadership. This section will see if you can develop, support, and sustain educational cultures and environments that are conducive to student learning and professional growth. Additionally, it will also test whether or not you know how to provide instructional leadership focused on effective teaching and learning.
The AEPA Subtest II, AZ281, has two tested subareas: Organizational and Human Resource Management and Fiscal and Operational Management and Legal/Ethical Guidelines. The proportions are also 60% from the selected-response items and 40% from the constructed-response items.
The Organizational and Human Resource Management subarea will see if you understand how to organize and manage district improvement and drive improvement in administrators and staff.
The Fiscal and Operational Management and Legal/Ethical Guidelines subarea will assess your understanding of fiscal and operational management as well as the laws, regulations and judicial decisions affecting education in Arizona.
