There’s no acting when it comes to the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments Theater Test. If you want to teach Theater in Arizona, you will have to earn that position through the AEPA Theater Exam. No recitation of a special monologue will get you certified, but passing the AEPA Theater Exam, AZ049, will help you earn the necessary certification required by the Arizona State Board of Education.
Those wanting to give the test a shot can sign up for the computer based test year-round. A passing score on the AEPA Theater Exam is 240, and testers are given two hours and thirty minutes to answer 100 multiple-choice questions. After completing the test, results are sent out 1-4 weeks from the test date to the e-mail provided upon registering for the AEPA Theater Test.
There are four main subareas of the AEPA Theater Test. The largest subarea, Playwriting, Performance, and Direction of Dramatic Works, makes up approximately 37% of the test. Theater History and Dramatic Literature is the next largest subarea, coming in a close second at 31%. The subarea titled Design, Production, and Management of Dramatic Works is around 19% of the AEPA Theater Test, while Theater Education only makes up around 13%.
- Playwriting, Performance, and Direction of Dramatic Works is a large portion of the AEPA Theater Exam, but it only tests three main objectives. Testers should be able to understand principles of playwriting and dramatic structure, principles of acting, and principles of directing.
- Theater History and Dramatic Literature tests understanding of the history of drama and theater, British and other European dramatic literature, dramatic literature of the United States, and dramatic literature from other cultural traditions.
- Design, Production, and Management of Dramatic Works has two main objectives in the AEPA Theater Test: understanding principles of producing and managing theatrical performances and understanding set, costumes, and lighting design and execution.
- Theater Education, the smallest portion of the AEPA Theater Exam, tests understanding of principles of theater education for children and adolescents and the interdisciplinary nature of theater.
