What is the STAAR Test?

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) is a testing program used in Texas public schools to test how well students know core subjects like Math, Reading, and Science. STAAR tests are also used to evaluate how effective schools and districts are, which can help inform policy and curriculum in the future.

If you’re in high school, you’ll have to take five end-of-course (EOC) STAAR tests as you finish each respective class, and you have to pass every test in order to graduate.

STAAR Test Results

The EOC STAAR tests are scored using a scaled scoring method.

For every question you answer correctly, you get one point added to your raw score. At the end of the test, your final raw score will be converted to a scaled score, which falls on a slightly different range for each test. The score you need to pass also varies from test to test.

The reason your raw score is converted to a scaled score is because everyone that takes the test is given a slightly different set of questions. Since everyone has a different arrangement of questions, and because some questions are harder than others, converting your raw score to a scaled score ensures a more even playing field.

Performance Levels

Your final score will fall into one of four performance levels:

  1. Did not meet grade level
  2. Approaches grade level
  3. Meets grade level
  4. Masters grade level

You’ll need to achieve at least the “Approaches grade level” performance level to pass.

AI Grading for the STAAR Test

In an effort to save time and money, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) implemented a “hybrid-scoring” model in 2024, which involves using a computer system to help grade STAAR tests. Specifically, the computer will grade about 75% of the test, then hand it over to a human to grade the last 25%.
