What is FTCE?
The Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) are designed to ensure that individuals seeking licensure as educators in Florida have the knowledge and skills necessary to perform effectively in the state’s public school system.
There are three main types of FTCE exam:
- General Knowledge
This test measures foundational academic skills across math, reading, English, and writing (and all four subtests must be passed). The test is typically one of the first exams candidates take and is required for entry into many educator preparation programs. - Professional Education
This test assesses knowledge of pedagogy, instructional strategies, assessment, and the learning environment. It is required for a professional certificate. - Subject Area
These tests cover a wide range of teaching fields across all grade levels, including English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, world languages, special education, early childhood education, and many others.
In addition to the FTCE, Florida also administers the Florida Educational Leadership Examination (FELE) for candidates seeking certification as school administrators.
The specific exams you need to take will depend on your licensure pathway. Check the Florida Department of Education’s Bureau of Educator Certification website or consult with your educator preparation program to confirm your requirements.
