What is TExES?
The Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) are designed to ensure that individuals seeking licensure as educators in Texas have the knowledge and skills necessary to perform effectively in the state’s public school system.
There are four main types of TExES exam:
- Content
These tests cover a wide range of teaching fields across all grade levels, including English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, world languages, special education, early childhood education, and many others. - Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities
This test measures your knowledge of instructional strategies, classroom management, assessment, and the professional responsibilities of educators. - Supplemental
These tests cover additional certification areas, allowing you to add endorsements to your base certificate. - Science of Teaching Reading
This test is required for educators seeking certification in areas that involve early reading instruction.
The Texas certification program also administers a pre-admission content test (TX PACT), which is utilized by some educator preparation programs as a pre-admission requirement.
The specific exams you need to take will depend on your licensure pathway. Check the TEA website or consult with your educator preparation program to confirm your requirements.
